Nissan Licenses Camera Image Processing Technology to Joint Development partner Clarion

Around View Monitor and Moving Object Detection to be licensed to Clarion

YOKOHAMA (Feb. 14, 2011) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced that it has licensed its camera image processing technology, used in Around View Monitor and Moving Object Detection (MOD), to its joint development partner, Clarion Co., Ltd.

Nissan introduced the world's first Around View Monitor in Elgrand in 2007 in the Japanese market, which offers the driver a bird's eye view of the vehicle's surroundings in real-time, by using four camera images shown on the car navigation system display.

Around View Monitor synthesizes the image taken by cameras mounted on the front, sides and rear of the vehicle and displays the parking space and the position of the vehicle on the screen mounted in the instrumental panel. This is a highly practical technology that provides real-time information about the vehicle's surrounding environment. MOD is a driving assistance technology designed to detect moving objects around the vehicle and alert the driver to their presence using the image taken by four cameras for Around View Monitor. The addition of the MOD function further enhances the characteristics of the Around View Monitor system.

Through the licensing agreement, Clarion will be able to sell Around View Monitor and MOD to other companies.

Nissan will contribute to the growth of technology through its efforts to promote the application of its unique technologies and know-how, not only for its own use, but also in a variety of fields. Profit generated through the effective utilization of such intangible assets will be used for investing in new technology development, further contributing to Nissan's technological competence.

The licensing of this technology is an example of these efforts, and Nissan will promote the wide-spread application of these systems to increase adoption to a wide range of vehicles including those of other automakers. By contributing to technology growth, Nissan hopes to play a role in the development of a sustainable society.
