Nissan named a women-friendly 'Nadeshiko Brand' by Tokyo Stock Exchange

Nadeshiko Brand

YOKOHAMA, Japan (March 18, 2015) - Nissan has been recognized as a "Nadeshiko Brand" by the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) for its efforts as a company that is supportive of women in the workplace. The Nadeshiko designation is part of a joint effort by the TSE and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) that acknowledges companies listed on the TSE's first section for their efforts to improve the working environment for women. The Nadeshiko scheme began in 2012 and this is the third time for Nissan to be named as a Nadeshiko Brand. Nadeshiko is a type of pink flower that has come to symbolize feminine strength and empowerment in Japan.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange selected Nissan for the following reasons:

"Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. promotes the active participation of female employees as part of its management strategy by 'supporting female career development' and 'reflecting female perspectives in the work process,' which are the two main pillars of its diversity activities. As for women's career-promotion support, Nissan provides career development workshops and skill development training to female employees. Additionally, external training and management workshops are provided to women in manager-level positions globally to help develop female personnel for executive positions. As a result, at Nissan, the ratio of female general managers or above increased to 5% in Japan; the ratio of women in manager-level positions increased to 7% in Japan and to 11% globally, all as of April 2014. Nissan has also assisted its employees to improve their work-life balance. Since January 2014, Nissan has expanded its work-at-home system to allow employees to work at home up to five days (40 hours) a month. In fiscal year 2013, approximately 2,400 employees used the system."
(Translated summary of the key points in the recognition for Nissan's efforts given by the Tokyo Stock Exchange and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry )

Nissan is actively promoting diversity as one of its corporate strengths. Women are the main decision-makers for more than 60 percent of vehicle purchases, so Nissan believes it is essential to develop products and services which incorporate the perspective of female consumers. To respond to diverse market needs, Nissan is developing a working environment where women can play an active role as project leaders and within the organization.
