Nissan announces FY2015 vehicle recycling results in Japan

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the results of its vehicle recycling and recovery in Japan for FY2015 (April 2015 to March 2016). In line with the Nissan Green Program 2016, the company's mid-term environmental plan, Nissan has been working to improve its end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling to achieve a top-level recovery rate in Japan.

Nissan’s Automobile Shredder Residue (ASR) recovery rate was 98.0%*1 in FY2015—the tenth consecutive year that Nissan has exceeded the 70% target of the Japan Automobile Recycling Law*2. The ELV recovery ratio was 99.6%*3.

In the same period, the recycling ratio for airbag-related products was 93.3%*4, exceeding the legal requirement of 85%. Nissan also processed a total of 114,696 kg*5 of fluorocarbons.

The cost of recycling these materials was 4,847,211,302 yen. Recycling fees and income generated from the vehicle-recycling fund totaled 5,608,497,414 yen, contributing to a net surplus of 761,286,112 yen. From FY2004 to FY2015, the net surplus was 4,532,526,069 yen, equivalent to 720 yen per vehicle. For the mid- and long-term, Nissan anticipates recycling costs to stabilize.

Nissan has continued to achieve an ASR-related landfill and incineration disposal ratio of zero since FY2012 and will continue to strive for an ASR recovery ratio of 100%.

*1Base figures: 97,075 tons of the 99,063 tons of ASR collected from 458,492 vehicles
*2Article 27.2 of Automobile Recycling Law and Article 29 of Enforcement Regulations (Law Concerning Recycling Measures of End-of-life Vehicles), effective from January 1, 2005
*3In May 2003, the Japanese government placed Nissan’s ELV recovery ratio at 81.6%. The difference between 81.6% and 99.6% represents ASR recovery. (ELV recovery rate 99.6% = 81.6% + (18.4% x 98.0%).
*4Base figures: 1,585,371 airbag-related products recovered from 408,539 vehicles (recovery processing and on-board deployment)
