The Clipper to be rolled out next month will be Nissan's first mini-commercial vehicle. Together with the Moco minicar released in April last year, it will give Nissan one passenger car line and one commercial vehicle line each in the mini-vehicle market.  The new Clipper will further expand Nissan's product lineup, ranging from passenger cars to commercial vehicles and mini-vehicles and enable the company to respond to a wider spectrum of customer needs and wants.

The new Clipper mini-commercial vehicle will be available in two body types, a Truck and a Van. Both types feature exceptional ease of use ranking among the best in their class, including attributes such as large cargo-carrying capacity and nimble maneuverability. In addition, with a driver's SRS airbag system among the standard safety equipment provided*1, the Clipper also achieves high-level safety performance. With regard to environmental friendliness, all Clipper models are certified as excellent low-emission vehicles (E-LEVs)*2 under the low-emission vehicle certification system of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The Clipper is supplied to Nissan by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation under an OEM supply arrangement.

*1 Except for some specialequipment models
*2 The low-emission vehicle certification system of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport was inaugurated on April 1, 2000 to promote the diffusion of low-emission vehicles through their selection by ordinary consumers. To qualify for E-LEV certification, a vehicle must reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions by an additional 50% from the levels mandated by Japan's 2000 exhaust emission regulations.

Origin of the model name
Clipper was used as the model name of a Nissan small truck that was marketed in Japan from September 1958 to January 1976. It comes from the English word  "clipper"  referring to something that moves swiftly such as a fast horse.

The following features are among the principal attributes distinguishing the Clipper:
 ·  High levels of intrinsic performance and usability for mini-commercial vehicle user
 ·  A driver's SRS airbag system as standard safety equipment (Except for some specialequipment models)
 ·  The largest cargo space and one of the widest back door openings (Van) in its class

Sales target   20,000 units/year

Dealers selling the Clipper
Nissan and Motor channel dealers of the Nissan Blue Stage, and Satio, Prince and Cherry channel dealers of the Nissan Red Stage (including Nissan Red & Blue Stage dealers that handle all models)

Clipper Overview
1. High levels of intrinsic performance and usability for mini-commercial vehicle user

Clipper Truck
 ·  Cargo-carrying capacity
At 1,415 mm, the Truck has one of the widest beds in its class, as well as providing an effective bed length (from the guard frame to the rear gate) of 1,925 mm, enabling it to accommodate a wide variety of cargo.

The height of the bed surface from the ground is set at a low 650 mm for reduced effort in loading and unloading cargo.

It also comes with a variety of handy equipment features for enhanced working ease, such as guard frame and rear gate protectors, a work light and a rear gate chain, among others.

 ·  Cockpit
The sliding assist grips provided on both the driver's and passenger's sides and a low step height of 365 mm allow easy entry and exit.

The driver's seat slides fore and aft up to 90 mm, enabling users to maintain a suitable driving position.

Outstanding maneuverability is achieved with a minimum turning radius of 4.0 meters.

Clipper Van
 ·  Cargo-carrying capacity
The cargo area width and height are among the largest in this class, measuring 1,370 mm and 1,230 mm, respectively. Together with a cargo bay length of 1,840 mm, these dimensions enable the Van to accommodate large numbers of beer cases, bread cases, rice straw mats and plywood sheets, among other items.

The seatback of the passenger's seat folds down forward to create enough space to carry carpets for a six-mat (approximately 9.8 m2) room.

The back door opening is one of the widest in this class at 1,285 mm. This wide opening and the bed height of 650 mm from the ground facilitate smooth and easy loading/unloading operations.

 ·  Cockpit

The sliding assist grips provided on both the driver's and passenger's sides and a low step height of 365 mm make ingress and egress easy

The driver's seat slides fore and aft as much as 150 mm.

The minimum turning radius is a small 4.3 m.

2. Mechanisms
Powering the Clipper is the 660-cc 3G83 engine that generates higher torque in the practical speed range to provide ample start-off and hill-climbing acceleration even when the vehicle is loaded with cargo.

The Clipper offers a selection of three transmissions: a 5-speed manual, a 3-speed automatic or a 4-speed automatic. The 4-speed automatic transmission features integrated control with the engine to deliver smooth driving performance with little shift shock.

The 4WD system can be activated at the touch of a button. Truck models fitted with the manual transmission are equipped with a High-Low selector lever for obtaining greater traction on rough roads.

3. Safety and environmental friendliness
A driver's SRS airbag system is a standard safety feature on all models, except for some special equipment work vehicles.

All models have E-LEV certification because they emit 50% fewer emissions than the levels required by Japan's 2000 exhaust emission standards.

A passenger's SRS airbag system plus front-seat seatbelts with pretensioners and an antilock braking system (ABS) are optionally available on all grades.
