Nissan’s exploration of the beauty and archaeology of Brazil ends in Bahía

In three days, journalists travelled more than 600 km to visit Bahía’s main archaeological sites while facing off-road challenges in the Nissan Frontier

LENÇÓIS, Bahia – The fourth and final stage of "Nissan expedition: exploring the origins of Brazil" recently concluded in Bahía, Brazil, where adventurers explored the natural beauty of the Chapada Diamantina National Park and visited one of the most emblematic archeological sites in the state, Serra das Paridas. During the three-day event, journalist and guests studied cave paintings and learned about Brazilian history while testing the capabilities of the new Nissan Frontier on challenging off-road and rocky trails.

At the end of this stage, participants visited the Serra das Paridas site in Bahía, which is home to a large variety of original cave paintings, featuring geometrical shapes spread across the steep rocky walls – as well as motifs depicting animals and vegetables. This site also exhibits pieces of great artistic quality in ochre, yellow, black and white shades, painted hundreds of thousands of years ago by local caveman hunters.

Two versions explain the origins of the site's interesting name: The Mountain of Giving Birth. The first one, according to locals, says that cows visited Serra das Paridas from neighboring cities to give birth in this location. The other version affirms that the name comes from ancient paintings that illustrate women squatting and ready to give birth, a method practiced still in some local cultures today.

The group also visited the Morro do Pai Inácio Mountain (Father Pai Inácio's Hill) in the city of Palmeiras, one of the most popular attractions in Chapada Diamantina National Park. It features a 1,120-meter hill with beautiful views of other rocky formations such as Morro do Camelo (Camel Mountain), Morrão (Big Mountain) and Três Irmãos (Three Brothers).

A territory formed over 1.7 billion years ago, Chapada Diamantina National Park is located 400 km from Salvador, Bahía's city capital, and holds some of the highest altitudes in Brazil's Northeast Region – with peaks reaching over 2,000 meters – plus an enormous biodiversity and noteworthy buildings dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries.

"We are closing a chapter with this stage in Bahía," said Rogério Louro, Corporate Communications director at Nissan Brazil. "We had initially planned to organize four Nissan expeditions with the new Frontier, but thanks to the project's positive impact – both within Nissan and outside in media – we are evaluating organizing other stages."

"Nissan expedition: exploring the origins of Brazil"

The expedition visited archaeological sites in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Piauí, during the second half of 2017. The tour was designed following Nissan's commitment to get closer to Brazilian consumers by using its products in actions that aid benefitting the country – in this case, contributing to the culture and scientific research by promoting Brazil's large collection of cave paintings, mostly recognized abroad.

In 2014, Nissan began operations in its Resende Industrial Complex, located in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, Nissan is increasingly integrating into the local community and backing the country's cultural and social development. Nissan believes there are major milestones in the country's history and within the work of remarkable Brazilians that should be noticed by more audiences. For this reason, Nissan decided to launch themed expeditions to take journalists and guests to discover and promote Brazil's rich history.
