NISSAN TO SHOWCASE "STAR WINGS"AT THE 14TH ITS WORLD CONGRESS IN BEIJING

STAR WINGSVehicle Display:BLUEBIRD SYLPHY

TOKYO (Oct 9, 2007)— Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. will showcase - “STAR WINGS” - its advanced navigation system at the 14th Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) World Congress in Beijing.

The STAR WINGS-equipped vehicle will be available for demonstration and test-drive to visitors at the Congress. Nissan’s exhibit will highlight its research and development in the field of IT/ITS, which is focused on enhancing safety, environment and human-interface.

Nissan’s highlights at the ITS World Congress include the following:
  1. Vehicle Demonstration
    • “STAR WINGS” PROTOTYPE
STAR WINGS is a joint project between Nissan and the Beijing Transportation Information Center (BTIC), designed to assist drivers identify the fasted route to their destination via Nissan’s proprietary navigation system and traffic data received from BTIC’s probes on-board 10,000 taxis in the city. Nissan and BTIC begun joint-testing of the ITS in Beijing in January 2007. The results indicate that travel-time was reduced by a significant 20%. To further expand the reach of its traffic information field test and effectiveness to customers, Nissan is exploring ways to apply STAR WINGS to portable navigation devices (PND).

  2. Technology Displays
    • Distant Control Assist Systems (DCA)
The system helps drivers to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. When the vehicle is approaching the vehicle. The system uses a radar sensor installed in the front bumper which is able to determine the following distance and relative vehicle speed of both cars. If the driver releases the gas pedal or is not pushing the gas pedal, the system automatically applies the brakes in order to help the driver maintain a safe distance.
    • Lane Departure Prevention (LDP)
When the vehicle is getting close to lane markers as a result of driver inattention, the system issues a display-alert and buzzer for the driver to bring the vehicle back to the center lane. Brake actuator controls the brake pressure of each wheel individually to correct the vehicle movement.
    • Around View Monitor (AVM)
Four separate cameras mounted at the front and rear can record the image of the surrounding environment, to produce a bird’s eye-view of the vehicle. The system is especially helpful when parking, enabling the driver to steer easily and precisely into a parking space.
    • Real Time Information in the Cockpit (RTIC) Navigation System
The RTIC navigation system provides real time Beijing traffic information. The information is obtained from FM radio stations, and is particularly useful to drivers during peak congestion periods.
