Tokyo - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. reported today production, sales and export figures for November 2001. For the month, global production decreased 3.1%, while total unit sales for the three main regions, including Japan, North America and Europe were down 2.4%.
Production
Nissan's global production in November decreased to 216,947, down 3.1% from a year ago, representing the first year-on-year decrease in two months.
Domestic production in November was 114,129 units, up 7.8% from a year ago, representing the second consecutive year-on-year increase. The increase was mainly due to the strong domestic demand for the new Stagea and increased production for models that have recently received mid-life changes including the Wingroad and Liberty. Additionally, the company saw an increase in production of vehicles for export to the Middle East and X-TRAIL for overseas market.
Production in the U.S. increased 6.1%, with an increased production for the all-new Altima. Mexican production was up 0.6% supported by strong demand for Tsuru in domestic market and Sentra in the U.S. In Europe, due to lower demand for key volume vehicles, UK production decreased 15.3%. Spain production fell 54.4%, mainly due to ending production of the Serena.
In other regions production was down 32.9% in November, with Taiwan down due to intense competition, however, Thailand and South Africa posed production increases with strong sales.
Total overseas production in November 2001 totaled 102,818 units, down 13.1% from November 2000.
Sales
Nissan's domestic sales for November 2001 decreased 1.4% to 56,748 units in an overall slow market. Nissan's domestic market share was 18.2%, a 1.4-point increase from last year. The company saw strong sales for passenger cars, up 7.6% from last year, while total industry volume for passenger cars fell 5.4%. Sales saw an increase for the all-new Stagea launched in October and the Wingroad and Liberty, which received a mid-life change in October and May 2001 respectively. However, the Bluebird Sylphy and X-TRAIL newly launched last year and the Cube, Sunny and Elgrand recorded lower results compared to the stronger results last year.
Nissan's sales in the U.S. increased 6.9% from November 2000, representing the second consecutive year-on-year increase, as the all-new Altima, up 42.6% over last year, and Xterra, up 26.3%, fueled strong sales. Sales in Canada jumped 56.8%, driven by strong demand for the new Altima and Sentra. Mexico was up 15.5% with strong sales for the Tsuru.
Nissan's sales in Europe fell by 27.3% from November 2000. Sales for key models were slow, however, sales of the X-TRAIL were very strong as it has been well received by media and customers.
Exports from Japan
Nissan's exports in November 2001 increased 19.3% to 58,067 units, representing the second consecutive year-on-year increase. The overall increase is due primarily to strong demand in the Middle East for the new pickup truck and Patrol both of which received recent mid-life changes.
