Nissan and the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport Launch Large-Scale Test for Route Guidance to Verify Traffic Dispersion

YOKOHAMA, Japan (Dec. 16, 2011) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport will begin a large-scale demonstration test under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the New Traffic Information System Model Project signed by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the National Development and Reform Commission and the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission. The demonstration test will be launched from the end of January 2012 in the Wangjing district, Beijing City, and will verify the effects of traffic dispersion by dynamic route guidance with IT devices.

In the newly-developed demonstration system, user-equipped IT devices (PNDs, or Portable Navigation Devices) will be distributed to about 12,000 people living in the Wangjing district who applied to participate in the project. The system will provide dynamic route guidance* and eco-drive support* to these trial users for about eight months while they go about their daily lives with their vehicles.

The trial users can expect reduced travel time and fuel consumption. From past simulations, findings show that traffic dispersion can clearly be expected with a 10 percent adoption rate of the IT device. With the large-scale demonstration test in the Wangjing district, traffic dispersion can be measured and the accuracy of the simulation can be verified. This large-scale demonstration test to measure traffic dispersion effects with the IT device is the first attempt of this sort in the world.

A study will also monitor energy and CO2 reduction resulting from the dynamic route guidance and eco-drive support. Devices to record detailed driving data are installed in the vehicles of about 600 Nissan drivers living in Beijing City who applied to participate in the study. This study will help show the effects of the demonstration test in a more detailed way.

The results of the tests will be shown regularly on the project website run by the Beijing Municipal Government, and excellent eco-drivers will be recognized by the government. In addition to these efforts, promotion and widespread use of dynamic route guidance and eco-drive support are expected to greatly contribute to mitigate traffic congestion and reduce CO2 emissions.

Nissan has taken the initiative in China with the most-advanced IT, including the introduction of STAR WINGS for dynamic route guidance in 2008. Nissan is participating in the demonstration test launched by NEDO to mitigate traffic congestion, reduce energy consumption and lower CO2 output, as part of its mid-term environmental plan (NGP2016) announced earlier.

  1. * Dynamic Route Guidance
Real-time traffic information from the traffic information center is distributed to onboard devices via telematics (communications via mobile phones). Onboard devices receive highly accurate traffic information and show the driver the fastest route on the display.
  2. * Eco-Drive Support
This system promotes eco-driving by showing drivers their fuel-economy. It assists continuous eco-driving by providing advice and making a comparison with other drivers showing the eco-drive ranking.
