Nissan to join LGBT pride celebration in Tokyo

YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan will participate in Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2019, one of Asia’s largest LGBT pride celebrations, by hosting its own booth at the event for the first time.

Nissan is stepping up its presence at the annual festival, taking place April 28-29 in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park, after participating jointly with the British Embassy in Japan for the past two years. Visitors to the Nissan booth will be able to learn about the company’s initiatives to strengthen diversity and inclusion, key drivers for Nissan’s business competitiveness.

At Nissan, it’s a companywide commitment to seek solutions through the exchange of diverse opinions. By turning differences into strengths, the company aims to generate the most constructive and creative ideas possible. Nissan’s initiatives to support diversity in the workplace started with female talent development and have grown to include race, nationality, culture, age, gender identity and sexual orientation.

Nissan has been recognized as an LGBT-friendly workplace both in Japan and overseas. Last year, it became the first automaker to receive a Pride Index gold award for a second consecutive year from Work With Pride, a private Japanese organization that rates companies based on corporate policies, LGBT representation, awareness-raising, human resources systems and programs, community work and public relations.

Nissan’s initiatives in Japan have included regular seminars and e-learning courses on LGBT issues, aimed at realizing a workplace where all employees are free from the fear of prejudice due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. The company also offers gender-neutral restrooms at its offices and facilities, and employees can choose to receive their annual health checks separately from their co-workers.

In the U.S., Nissan has earned a score of between 90% and 100% on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index, which rates companies based on LGBTQ equality, for the past six consecutive years. In 2016, Nissan North America updated its corporate policies to include gender expression and identity under the same umbrella that protects against discrimination based on race, age, religion, disability and sexual orientation. Last year, the company sponsored LGBT pride celebrations in 20 cities across the U.S.
